Vntill the yeare 1540, whomsoever they did apprehend, they did either burne or gibbet, or dismissed them with markes in their foreheads. But about this time, there passed such a sentence against Merindoll, as never Parliament did parallel (like that of Assuerus, Esther 3. 13) by which their men and women were condemned to the fire, their Children outlawed, the Towne it selfe to be demolished, the wood within 200 foot round to be cut downe, and the place to be made utterly unhabitable. This barbarous sentence was passed, against these Innocents without the hearing of any of them who were condemned. |
