A motion of forbidding Priests to marry, was in the Councill of Nice, anno 325, but stayed by the perswasion of Paphnutius. Siricius did set it on foot againe, and restrained some Priests from marying, in the yeare 380: in the yeare 1076, Gregory the seventh (no singular chaste Pope) inforced single life, by Canons and persecutions.
